Volunteer Shares Heartfelt Gifts with Others
On Valentines’ Day and everyday, 90-year old Troy native Judy Walker shares her heart with others, including creating special gifts for our hospice patients. Judy started creating aromatherapy pillows for our patients when she became connected with Krissy McKim-Barker, volunteer coordinator at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “We were introduced three years ago, and brainstormed together on what might best fit into her schedule and area of expertise,” Krissy said. “The aromatherapy pillows seemed to be the perfect match, and she’s been sewing those ever since!”
Since Judy started the project, it is estimated that she has contributed 600 pillows to our organization. Essential oils are dropped onto the pillows. Patients benefit from the scent of the oils that allow them to relax and enhances their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
“Our patients so enjoy the end result of Judy’s hard work. Aromatherapy is proven to help calm and soothe patients,” Krissy said.
Judy has enlisted her brother, Bill Roop, into projects by having him drive her to the store to select sewing material. Judy started sewing when she was just six years old. She recalls creating her own dresses by hand. She eventually started sewing projects for others.
“Judy is an inspiration,” Krissy said. “I am privileged to work with Judy. It is such a blessing to know that people like Judy serving our patients.”
We thank Judy for her kindness and are honored to have her support. There are lots of ways people can volunteer and support the mission of Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. If you are interested in volunteering learn more by clicking here.
