The Gift of Crochet: An Ohio’s Hospice Volunteer’s Compassionate Act
Stitch by stitch, loop by loop, an Ohio’s Hospice Volunteer went the extra mile to grant a patient’s final wish by teaching her the art of crocheting.
Through her volunteer efforts, Judy Cole, a Volunteer at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, had served close to 20,000 hours over nearly 20 years, helping to preserve and enhance patient dignity.
Though her body was failing, Cole’s vibrant spirit was celebrated by passing the time with puzzles, books, and listening to Elvis Presley. But the prolific sewer of over 1,000 memorial bears wished to learn to crochet first.
Linda Smith, a two 1/2-year volunteer ambassador known for serving patients in an atmosphere of hospitality and caring, also donates crocheted items. Despite her busy schedule, Smith dedicated several hours over multiple visits to fulfill Cole’s wish to learn to crochet.
Smith sat patiently by Cole’s bedside, guiding her hands through the crochet motions stitch by stitch in a caring manner that reduced unnecessary suffering.
“Linda is the definition of selfless,” said an Ohio’s Hospice spokesperson. “She gave so generously of her time and talents to bring comfort and grant a final wish while Celebrating Life’s Stories for the individual we serve.”
More than teaching a new skill, Smith provided a reassuring presence that eased Cole’s anxiety.
“We’re grateful to have Volunteers like Linda who attend to the needs and wishes at the heart of our mission,” the spokesperson said. “Her gift was making a human connection that made the final transition peaceful.”
Cole died in February under the care of Ohio’s Hospice. However, her new crochet skill and time with the compassionate Volunteer leave an enduring legacy exemplifying the organization’s values.
As a not-for-profit, community-based hospice and supportive care organization, Volunteers are at the heart of the mission and make a difference in the lives of those they are privileged to serve each and every day at Ohio’s Hospice.
