Ohio’s Hospice Volunteers Jane and Storm Thunder Past 550 Patient Visits at Hospice House

Volunteers Jane and Storm reached a remarkable milestone as they celebrated their 550th visit to the Hospice House in 2024. This heartwarming partnership has been bringing comfort to the patients at our Hospice House in Dayton. Since August 2014, Jane and her animal-assisted therapy Samoyed named Storm, have been dedicated volunteers.

Jane Adams and Storm Celebrate 550 Visits

Animal-assisted therapy visits are provided by trained and certified therapy pets to help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage interaction, and elicit emotional responses from patients and families. Storm, known for her stunning white coat and gentle nature, has been a beacon of joy and comfort for everyone she meets in the Hospice House. She has an innate ability to sense and gravitate toward those in need while she visits.

For Jane and Storm, their weekly visits are not just a routine, but a beacon of hope for patients and their families. “Storm has this incredible ability to sense who needs her the most in each room. She goes straight to them, and their face lights up,” Jane shared. Even in the midst of difficult moments, patients find solace in Storm’s presence, a testament to the unique benefits of animal-assisted therapy.

Ohio’s Hospice has become a second home for Jane and Storm. After their visits, Jane and Storm often take time to walk the grounds, which helps them decompress.

Despite reaching an age where retirement could be considered for Storm, given that Samoyeds typically live for 12-14 years, the duo has no intentions of slowing down. Jane and Storm are currently working towards achieving elite status in American Kennel Club (AKC) nose work and are determined to reach their goal of 600 visits to the Hospice House in early 2025.

Ohio’s Hospice is thankful for Jane and Storm’s commitment to our mission. Their hard work and dedication to serving others is a testament to the kindness and compassion we show toward patients and their families each and every day.  You can read about Jane and Storm’s previous milestone by clicking here.
