Ohio’s Hospice Holds 14th Annual Camp for Children and Teens Coping with Loss
Ohio’s Hospice recently held its 14th annual You’re Not Alone youth grief and bereavement camp, at Camp Wanake in Beach City near New Philadelphia.
This year’s theme was, “Sailing a New Sea,” which incorporated fun pirate and nautical crafts and activities into the week for the 18 youth that attended as well as the 4 teen helpers.
Throughout the week, campers were encouraged to express their feelings of grief, in a safe, supported environment. They could participate in activities including music therapy, art, hiking, canoeing, rock-wall climbing and swimming.
A scavenger hunt was used to help remember loved ones and learn new coping skills to them in their grief journey.
The camp concluded with Family Night, where the campers shared creative songs, they learned with their families and participated in a memorial service.
Kelsie Gunnoe, a representative of Ohio’s Hospice, said the week-long free camp is designed to provide support and resources for children and teens ages 7-17 who have experienced the loss of a parent, sibling, or significant loved one.
“Losing a loved one is a challenging experience, especially for children and teens,” Gunnoe said. “I would like to thank the volunteers and staff who helped us make this meaningful week possible.”
The You’re Not Alone youth bereavement camp is offered for free to all participants, thanks to the generous support of the community.
