Ohio’s Hospice 2024 Camp Waves of Emotion Bereavement Camp for Children Featured Therapy Dogs and a ‘3-D’ Good Time
Ohio’s Hospice held its Camp Waves of Emotion, a free four-day grief and bereavement camp designed to support children ages 7-12 who have experienced the loss of a parent, sibling, or significant loved one, recently.
More participants were welcomed this year according to Bereavement Counseling Professional, David Hargrave.
“In the past we’ve capped attendance at 10, and accepted participants on a first come first served basis. This is because of space and logistic issues and the structure of our camp which includes ‘intentional processing of difficult content related to grief,’” he said.
Camp Waves of Emotion Bereavement Camp for Children Highlights:
- This year 14 participants were welcomed! Our volunteers were amazing and offered 1-on-1 support for each of our attendees as they worked through difficult emotions. Our group as currently constructed would not be possible without their support!
- 4 animal-assisted therapy dogs were in attendance.
- Community partners provided music therapy, yoga, crafts, and the use of University of Akron’s Wayne college “3-D lab” allowing attendees to process their grief in meaningful and adaptive ways. We are thankful for their support that made this years’ camp a success!
During Camp Waves of Emotion, children have the opportunity to engage in therapeutic activities led by trained bereavement counseling professionals and staff. Through art, music, play, and a specially designed grief curriculum, the camp aims to assist children in identifying and expressing their unspoken feelings and processing their grief in a supportive environment.
