Former Nurse Finds Fulfillment in Volunteering for Ohio’s Hospice
Kathy McMillen, deeply moved by the exceptional care her family received from Ohio’s Hospice for three consecutive years, decided to join Ohio’s Hospice as a volunteer in 2014.
“After we experienced the wonderful care and compassion of the hospice team, I knew it was time to give back,” McMillen said.
Initially, she devoted her time to visiting patients in the inpatient care center, where she provided comfort and companionship. As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, Kathy shifted her focus to enhance hand washing techniques to ensure the health and safety of both patients and staff. Later, Kathy transitioned to working at the front desk and in the volunteer office, roles that allowed her to interact more with the hospice community and manage administrative tasks.
“Volunteering with Ohio’s Hospice makes me feel very fulfilled and useful in my retirement after a busy nursing career,” McMillen said. One of her favorite aspects of volunteering is witnessing the generosity of others, mainly through the handmade items donated by volunteers and community members.
“It is just such a joy to see what all is being provided for hospice care,” McMillen said. “It reemphasizes that there are a lot of good, caring people out there.”
