Construction Begins on New Hospice House

Construction Begins on New Hospice House for Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County

Construction of the new Hospice House in Troy for Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County is underway and should be completed by late 2020 or early 2021. The new Hospice House will expand Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County’s capacity to provide superior care and superior services to patients facing life-limiting illnesses or conditions.

Since 2014, Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County has operated a seven-bed inpatient unit at Upper Valley Medical Center. The new Hospice House will be built on the hospital’s campus and provide 12 patient-care rooms, an interfaith chapel, spa and massage room, private meeting spaces for families, and a large family living room. Patient rooms will feature exterior doors that allow views and access to the outdoors.

“As more Ohioans turn 65 every day, and many face the end of life managing more than one complex illness, we anticipated the community need for more multifaceted care for the patients and families we have the privilege of serving,” said Heather Bolton, executive director at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. “While most hospice patients receive care at home, in an assisted living or nursing facility environment, our new Hospice House will be available for those patients that require a higher-level of care than they can receive at home.”

Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County serves 150 patients daily, on average, with up to seven of those patients in the current inpatient unit.

“Through 2019, Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County had a waitlist for an inpatient room on several days while at full capacity,” Bolton said. “We are honored that the new Hospice House will allow for expanded capacity and a permanent home for our organization.”

As a not-for-profit organization, it is important for Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County to be good stewards of its resources and donor dollars. “We believe it is more important to spend the time needed to build the right building now and one that will serve the community, our patients and our staff long into the future,” Bolton said.

The Hospice House will provide a home-like environment for patients at end of life, as well as house the administrative offices to support the entire interdisciplinary care team. The new building also will have training rooms for staff and volunteers in addition to community education rooms.

Future job growth of five to 10 jobs will be created to serve the increase of inpatient beds and a full kitchen. Additionally, the building plans include space for future growth of six more patient rooms.

Naming opportunities are still available. For more information, call Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County at 937.335.5191.
