A Teacher’s Legacy of Care: Joanne Streby’s Volunteer Journey with Ohio’s Hospice
As she retired from a career in teaching, Joanne Streby was encouraged to become a hospice volunteer by her sister who worked at Ohio’s Hospice for 26 years. Both their parents and Streby’s husband received hospice care, so the sisters took the volunteer training together to give back to the organization.
Since 2019, Streby has made gowns, pillows, and lap quilts for patients as well as commemorative squares for Veterans and memory dogs using loved ones’ clothing. She also helps with organizing and decorating Ohio’s Hospice Foundation fundraisers and prepping envelopes for large mailings.
“Ohio’s Hospice cared for my husband when he battled cancer through palliative and critical care. They allowed us to fulfill his wish to be home at the end,” Streby said. “Being a volunteer has allowed me to give back to an organization that helped me through difficult times and decisions, and it is comforting knowing that I have a little part in helping to provide comfort to others going through similar situations.”
Thank you, Joanne, for your dedication to supporting patients and families. We are grateful for your service to our mission.
